Furtwängler – A newly discovered tape of Schubert’s « Unfinished » Symphony

WPO Copenhagen – October, 1st 1950

Further to the publication on this site of the recording of the Beethoven « Fifth » by Wilhelm Furtwängler and the Wiener Philharmoniker made at a concert at the Copenhagen Odd Fellow Palaeet, on October, 1st 1950, and to the interest arisen by this publication with an unexpectedly great sound, we are pleased to inform you of the discovery, in Copenhagen, from a private source, of a copy of the master tape of the recording of Schubert « Unfinished » symphony made for the Danish Radio. The sound quality is of the same level as that of the Beethoven Fifth from the same concert: very good definition, beautiful timbres, high dynamics.

For this Schubert symphony, this previously unknown recording is the only one of a complete live performance of Furtwängler with the WPO. Indeed, the Stockholm concert recording (May 12, 1943) is comprised of only  the first movement.

Furtwängler was in a day of very great great inspiration. If the timings are the same as in the EMI recording of January 1950, the performance is on an even higher level, especially in the 2nd movement which has the same magic as encountered in the two central movements of Beethoven’s « Fifth » played after the intermission.

However, although having a Hi-Res copy of this recording, it is not possible for us to propose it on this site without the consent of the tape owner.

If a publication ever occurs, it should couple both recordings, since the performances of both symphonies mirror one another.

I understand, but the situation is quite unusual.
This recording has always been mentioned in the Furtwängler discography.

However, the recording of this concert always had the reputation of being of poor quality, so there was no real incentive to search for the other performance.

The liner notes of the Danacord LP of Beethoven 5th mentioned an amateur source not of a professional standard. Tahra published the recording of the Beethoven 5th in 2004 with a short radio announcement at the beginning (FURT 1090-1093), and the sound is indeed dull.

The publication of the Beethoven 5th on this blog with great sound which reveals that it was a very great performance has changed things.

It is certain that this new recording will be made available, but how it will be is the decision of the tape owner.

Thanks for the information. Odd that the first announcement should be in Japanese, since this was produced by the French division of Warner.
I knew Warner was going to publish the Copenhagen Schubert, but as far as the Beethoven is concerned, Danacord has the master tape.
Henning Smidth told me Danacord wanted to re-issue it, but nothing seems to have surfaced.

It is strange that the Warner site gives no explanation at all. Fortunately, on jpc.de:
https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/the-complete-wilhelm-furtwaengler-on-record/hnum/10607764, there is a comment which lists the items on each CD, so that I have been able to reconstruct the whole program.
It is difficult to understand why they chose to re-publish all of the Polydor, Telefunken, Decca, and DGG studio recordings which were on the recent (2019, but already deleted) DGG Album, but the alternate takes or rehearsal excerpts weren’t. Let’s hope the quality of the re-mastering will justify this.
There is also a duplication with the WF items on the Warner Album « Philharmonia-Birth of a Legend ».
The items from Covent Garden and the 1954 Matthaüs-Passion are there since they were recorded live by EMI for publication.

There are various opinions on Art & Son. Some find their remastering too metallic and will prefer Abbey Roads. I think they have done a good job on Callas live. They are reusing though remastering done for Philarmonia boxset and won’t redo them as quite recent. I would expect if that boxset work fine Warner to come with a Live boxset in a couple of years where they could exploit Ring 1953 and others.
Btw, looking around I realize we are both Swiss and french speaking. I am in Vevey 😉

Actually, think I confuse you with a link to another site you put on your menu, sorry 😉
